Che Guevara – Death and Resurrection

The authors analyze US media constructions of Ernesto Che Guevara at the time of his death and 30 years later when his remains were buried in Cuba. At stake is the meaning of Che Guevara and his position in the historical narrative as his image changed from the radical revolutionary and enemy of the United States during the early 1960s to a global cult figure of the 1990s. This project is about a process of re-articulating Che Guevara as he moved from being a symbol of radical opposition and revolutionary change to a commodified expression of nostalgia. It is based on an understanding of communication as articulation, which–when located within institutional contexts–dominates the cultural field and forms consciousness.
