एम.एल.ए. साहब के बारे में जानने की सबसे ज्यादा महत्त्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि वह एम.एल.ए. नहीं थे। जो वह एम.एल.ए. रहे होते तो उनकी तरफ़ मेरा ध्यान ही न गया होता क्योंकि आज एम.एल.ए. होने में क्या बड़ाई है। हर सातवां-आठवां आदमी या तो एम.एल.ए. है या होना चाहता है। क्योंकि कोयले की इस दलाली में मुंह तो जरूर काला होता है पर मुट्ठी गर्म रहती है तो आज मुंह की क्या हैसियत। असल चीज तो मुट्ठी है और एक आसानी यह भी है कि यह काले लोगों का तो देश ही है, फिर मुंह की कालिख दिखाई किसे देगी, इसलिए ज्+यादातर लोग एम.एल.ए. या एम.एल.ए. के रिश्तेदार बनने की फ़िक्र में दुबले या मोटे होते रहते हैं। कहने का मतलब यह है कि एम.एल.ए. होने या न हो पाने में कोई नयापन नहीं रह गया है। आपको हर मुहल्ले में दो-चार एम.एल.ए. या एक्स एम.एल.ए. या एम.एल.ए. होते-होते रह जाने वाले मिल जायेंगे। तो फिर ऐसों की कहानी सुनाने में क्या मजा? और ऐसों की कहानी ही क्या इसीलिए एम.एल.ए. साहब में मेरी दिलचस्पी तब बढ़ी जब मुझे यह मालूम हुआ कि वह एम.एल.ए. हैं ही नहीं।
चुनाव के दिन थे। हर तरफ़ बड़ी चहल-पहल थी। लोग अपने-अपने कारोबार छोड़कर चंद दिनों के लिए नेता बने ठस्से से तक़रीरें करते घूम रहे थे।
